         hello again --

we're having technical difficulties replying to people, so amy and jen (the only 2 Real Friends who are not male we have back home who write to us, hint hint) this is for you too.  we're all still recovering from friday night so watch out out, we're borrowing from julz's journal: "we are getting along excellent.  scotty is the organized one and josie (aka frik - me being frak) and i are more of the garth and wayne of the kiwi experience.  now that i have these ridiculous bangs (thanks mom) and continue to have no sense of direction and seem to usually stumble onto success rather than methodically seek it out, josie, a mirror reflection of my own blondness, but with better bangs, is an excellent assistant. [you should have seen them get us dropped off 5 miles from where we wanted to actually be today] scotty is now sick of being the responsible one, so josie and i have vowed to be true to our roots (our darker, or in my case, strawberry blond, roots) and take charge. we figure that between the two of us we should be able to navigate most of our upcoming adventures and hopefully make it back to the states by sometime mid-november.  we are hoping that our threats of creating a whole new series of blond jokes abroad from our own follies will inspire scotty to want to lead the way again and we will be able to return to the states as originally planned.... stay tuned, the blonds abroad saga continues (are you worried yet?)"

Road Trip Rest Stop

(think Mission Impossible music right now)

Exhibit A - Josie's first assignment - bargaining a taxi ride for 6 dollars - the rumored price - and insisting that no way in hell were we going to get into the cab at any other price.  of course, that was when the cab driver informed us that it was only 2 dollars to the Raki Raki hotel.  It was an easy sell ;)

Exhibit B - Julz's first assignment - finding accomodations in Blenheim,  NZ.  We were supposed to break in to our friend Peter's parents house.  Although he said that his parents would be happy to set us up, they weren't actually home to ask them if they wouldn't mind taking in 3 americans last night. when we were en route, Peter said that he would keep phoning them, but if he got no response we were welcome to take a taxi to their house, take the house key out from underneath the sleeping dog, go around to the side door, punch in the alarm code and make ourselves at home.  (This is a pre-warning to all parents: we gave the same instructions to everyone on their way to southern california - so if you see the lights on, don't shoot)

just to give you a slice of our travelling lives, well, right now we don't stink.  we just did our laundry and can proudly walk around as clean, non-matching americans, instead of smelly canadians (we always say "ay?" after all our bad jokes and leave town). although we all claim to be low maitenance,  we discovered that all julz needs is vegetables,  an hour of exercise, a cup of coffee (she tried to quit on this trip but we wouldn't let her as we drove her straight to a cafe and opened a tab) and for scotty to pull the heck over so she can get a picture of every sunset.  she now has five rolls of sunset shots and speeding cars and nothing else.  scotty is the e-ticket driver and resident spellchecker (how's that bungaloo, julz?) of the little Toyota Tercel That Could.  we have seen all of new zealand from the left side of the  road at 120 km/hour. josie's just been in the passenger seat with the wig on scaring small children in the back of minivans.

in case you actually want to hear about the country we're in, new zealand is as beautiful (julz has sunset pictures from the backseat at 120 km/hour if anybody needs them) as everyone has told you.  there aren't coffee shops anywhere, there is one tearoom for every 15 craft shops (hear that mom?), and we had one petrol (notice how we're getting the lingo down) scare.  luckily the gas station was at the bottom of the hill and we only made one wrong turn on the way (a la navigation by josie - so we're actually not on the south island, but circling the auckland airport looking at really good postcards.  it looks like
Queenstown is just another good book away, so we may head down that way  tomorrow.)

Scotty & Josie with the Little Rental Car That Could

josie is all set for southeast asia now (no chinese nationalist necessary for her)... scotty (putting martha stewart to shame) created a wedding ring out of spare car parts at the car hire shop in auckland.  (although maybe she should worry about how cheap it makes her imaginary husband look: she'll be bragging about life with joey buttafucco back in the states) julz will escape us just before then, so josie might borrow her favorite outfit of flowered pants and a plaid flannel (then for sure she won't get sold)....

friday night we experienced wellington nightlife, although if you ask julz it might as well be san francisco everything we see resembles something in the states to her, so for anyone who wants to save some cash, the drive up hwy 1 to sf is the same as hwy 1 south from Picton  to Christchurch.)  There was a band that wore wigs (not as cool looking as  ours, mind you)and impersonated the beatles.  they rocked so we acted like groupies and rushed the stage (amy, we didn't bruise the lead singer though.)  later we went to another bar and swing danced with the locals (boys, start practicing, this was awesome).  only a few kiwis were limping when we left, so all was well and we didn't have to pretend we were canadian for the third time that day.

Not the soberest picture

we're improving on our pool game, although scotty found out the hard way that it isn't nice to tell kiwis in a bar that americans have bigger balls (the snooker tables here have smaller balls and pockets, mom, get your mind out of the gutter).

we just arrived in christchurch this afternoon, much to the surprise of  our host, Rich, who had no idea that we were coming (thanks again, Peter).  after we introduced ourselves and used his phone, he took us on a great tour of the city (think a cross between la jolla and colorado) and then to his work, where we've proceeded to use the terminal of  Katie's dad (or at least that's what the drawing pasted on the wall says), who is a little bit of a voyeuer we think because his mousepad is a blown up boob shot and there's a scantily clad bikini girl as a screensaver that we're thinking is probably not katie's mom. we don't think katie comes around much.  anyway, we've bothered all the people who've come in this weekend to get some extra work done long enough, so we'll sign off now, ay?

love wayne, garth and julie mccoy

p.s. please take agriffiths@montgomery.com off the list; she'll let you know (right amber?) what the new address is (congratulations, amber and kami on your declaration of independence - we highly support your decision, when are you meeting us down under?   btw, how come we had to hear it from jen and amy?)   also, please add these two addresses to the growing list of people subscribing to the Three Broads Abroad saga: .... (unless you think karen's sister julie would be too scared to hear this much about us before she's met us), ..., ..., and last but not least,  HotswingdancingkiwiDude@hotbeefinjectioncafe.ay?

p.s.#2  snail mail addresses abroad (and Please Send Mail, packages, mushy love letters, and dear jane letters if necessary after this letter)
